Aramis to Braves Update
It appears that the talks of the Braves acquiring Aramis Ramirez have died down. Reports are that the Braves would like Ramirez for the rest of this year, but only if Ramirez would agree to re-structure his deal.
As it is, Ramirez owns a $14.6 million player option for the 2011 season which he will almost certainly exercise given his performance this year combined with the economy would make it hard for him to get that kind of contract on the open market.
Also built into Ramirez’s contract is a $16 million option for 2012 that becomes guaranteed if traded.
Complicating the issue further is that Chipper Jones is owed $14 million in 2011- money it appears he intends to collect by returning.
Though Ramirez would be a perfect fit for the Braves on the field, it looks like the money will hold this potential deal up.
ESPN 1000 Bruce Levine reports that teams are still inquiring about Derrek Lee and other Cub veterans. Last month, Derrek Lee turned down a potential deal to the Los Angels Angels of Anaheim.
It is unclear if the Cubs have approached Lee with any other potential deals.
